    Brescia in a day

Brescia is a fascinating city, an hour’s drive from Idro. It is the city of the Mille Miglia, the famous car race, and of the Brescian aperitif Pirlo (tip: in Brescia, order a Pirlo, not a Spritz)… and yes! The glorious footballer Andrea Pirlo was also born nearby.

What is worth seeing in Brescia?

Here is a selection of what you can do in one day in Brescia:

    • The UNESCO World Heritage Site – the largest Roman archaeological area in northern Italy:

The Capitolium, Piazza Foro and the Roman basilica combined with the monumental area of San Salvatore and Santa Giulia. Don’t miss the cross of Desiderius, king of the Lombards!

    • Castle of Brescia:

Visit the Castle of Brescia, which offers panoramic views over the city. The castle has a rich history and houses the Weapons Museum and the Museum of the Risorgimento.

    • Duomo Nuovo and Duomo Vecchio:

Admire the two cathedrals, the Duomo Nuovo and the Duomo Vecchio. The Duomo Nuovo is a stunning example of Baroque architecture, while the Duomo Vecchio is a rare example of Romanesque architecture with a circular plan and beautiful works by Romanino, Moretto and Cossali.

    • Piazza della Loggia:

Visit Piazza della Loggia, a beautiful square surrounded by Renaissance buildings. The Loggia itself is an imposing structure with a bell tower. Enjoy a coffee or snack at one of the cafes in the square and go shopping.

    • Teatro Grande:

In the heart of the city centre lies one of Italy’s most important theatres with beautiful paintings. Pop in, even if only for a coffee, to enjoy the elegant atmosphere.

    • Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo:

If you are an art lover, visit the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo, an art gallery with works by Italian artists from the 13th to the 18th century.

Before leaving Brescia, have an aperitif and ask for a Pirlo!

    Enjoy your visit to Brescia!
