    Sentiero dei Contrabbandieri

A mountain path with a long history as we are talking about a smugglers path. Sugar and tobacco were the main contraband which went from Austria to Italy. On the way, we come across the old Italian border with the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which is now the current border of Brescia and Trentino.

This route can be started in both Vesta and Baitoni. This time I started in Baitoni. And here too I can choose from 2 starting points.

From the beach, continue until the boatdock, you will find the starting point  on the left. This is indicated with a nameplate. The other option is to drive / walk towards Bondone. The second starting point is located in the third hairpin bend.

The start from Vesta also starts behind the boatdock, to the right of the beach.

    Route

The route takes an hour and a half and is about 3.5 km long with a height difference of about 200 meters. It is a fairly simple walk, but should not be underestimated. At a few moments the paths are quite narrow. Steel lines have been placed here to hold on to as you pass, so use these too.

You can also combine this route with the Ferrata Sasse that runs under this walking route. For this you need the right equipment (helmet, harness for ferrata). That is mandatory. In the summer months, when the ferry is running, you could use it for the way back. Then keep an eye on the tilde of the ferry service.

As a third option for the way back there is another walking route, which is 150 meters higher than the Contrabbandieri and is called “Sentiero dei Tralicci”.

I recommend good shoes for all walking routes. And always take plenty to drink with you. It is strictly forbidden to do these routes with the mtb.

To be clear, this is a real trekking route with some very narrow passages and not suitable for small children.
