A nice walk to this fascinating ruin with an interesting history. This castle was built in the 12th century to guard the road that connects the Giudicarie valley with the Brescian territory.
History
Heavily damaged by cannon fire during the First World War, Castel Romano nevertheless recounts its past: the bloody clashes between the Milanese and the Venetians with their petty intrigues (15th century), the course of the Episcopal feud and the occupation by Garibaldi’s troops (1866).
Of the frescoes that covered the living rooms, unfortunately only one dating from the 15th century has been preserved, depicting a confrontation of armies. However, the charm of the castle is still great, perhaps because of the legends surrounding it: according to the most famous one, Countess Dina Lodron used to invite the most beautiful young men of the estate here to be killed. Fortunately, a priest did justice and freed the community from the curse by killing the countess.

Natural beauty
Pieve di Bono is located about 22 km north of Lake Idro. The route of about 5 km in total is very easy and certainly doable for young hikers. I recommend parking the car at the infopoint Valle del chiese in Pieve di Bono. This is located on the main road. I will mention the address below the article. Here you can also get information about the opening hours and tours in the castle. Walk in the direction of the village and choose one of the many little streets that lead up. Unfortunately, it is not very well signposted, but at some point you will come to a forest path and that is where the route starts. If you want to be sure you have the right path, walk up along the water and not through the village.
You will be surrounded by natural beauty and there is a stream with nice fresh mountain water. Because there are so many trees, it is very pleasant to walk there in the summer. At a certain point, you will find a road to the left of the footpath that goes up at a right angle. Turn here and walk up the steps. For the way back, you can take the other route and thus walk in a ring this beautiful walking route.
Panoramic point
Once you reach the top, you are face to face with a magnificent ruin, very impressive. From here, you have a great view over the whole valley. Go and explore and be surprised by this magical place. There is a small road on the south side of the ruin, if you follow it you will come to a panoramic point where you can clearly see the basins of the water plant.
Although the route is very easy, good shoes are a must. Also take plenty to drink. This hike is perfect for a half day trip. This location is also ideal for a picnic!
