    Fortress Cima Ora

The fortress of Cima Ora, or what is left of it because it is more of a ruin, dates back to the First World War and is located at 1539 m in the municipality of Anfo. From the top, where the cannon emplacements once stood, there is a magnificent view of the surrounding mountains.

    The road

I have to be honest, the road to the top is not very attractive. From Anfo to the car park ( location Baremone) is about 10 km of curves and some parts are quite narrow. I really recommend driving slowly and honking your horn at the bends. But it is really worth it! Once you reach the top, you can park your car on the right side of the road.

    The walking route

From here, you continue on foot and keep to ‘forte Cima Ora’. That means, follow the white gravel road. There are some variations but they are not really clearly marked. Of course, I was stubborn again and despite walking a beautiful panoramic route, I did miss the exit (due to a missing signpost).
So, follow the gravel road and you will arrive at the fortress after about 45 minutes of walking. The route is easy and not strenuous.

    Fortress Cima Ora

It is forbidden to enter the fortress, and also dangerous. So feel free to look inside but stay outside and follow the road that leads to the roof of the fort. Here you can see very well where the cannons were once placed.

    Panoramic route

For the way back you can take the same route, or you can take a part of the panoramic route. (The route I took in the beginning) Walking back from the fort, at the third hairpin bend, there is a small road leading down. Take it and at some point you will see Lake Idro. Walk on and then you can choose, left or right….. If you still have energy left, go left and walk along a beautiful mountain path towards the north as far as you want and then return. If you are tired or it is time to go home, turn right immediately. At some point you will see the white gravel path again on your right.

As I said, the route is simple but always be careful. Mountain terrain remains mountain terrain so good shoes, clothes and plenty of water!
